Transportation

This is an overview of transportation to/from and within Svalbard.

Note that all of Svalbard is Norwegian territory, thus there is no need for a passport/visa to visit the archipelago or to visit the Russian settlement. However, all non-Norwegian citizens must show their passport when returning to the Norwegian mainland.

Service   More...
Airplane During winter season there are 1-2 scheduled flights to Ny-Ålesund from Longyearbyen every week. During the spring- and summer season there are three scheduled flights. You can book air plane tickets at Kings Bay AS (booking@kingsbay.no). However, if you are involved in a project you have to book the airplane and accommodation via your research station (see above). Go to
Port Ny-Ålesund has modern harbour facilities with a 70 m long quay and a maximum water depth of 8.5 m. The pier is accessible from May to October under normal ice conditions. Go to
Ships Cargo ships (Bring logistics) to Ny-Ålesund normally depart from Tromsø in northern Norway with connections to Ny-Ålesund every two to four weeks during May and October (Shipping timetable). In winter the cargo ship service to Ny-Ålesund is rather irregular, depending on ice conditions and demand.

Passengers may join a cruise ship (Nordstjernen) that has frequent departures from Longyearbyen and has a stop at Ny-Ålesund during summer
