Another year of mass balance measurements on Holtedahlfonna 10.11.2010

The mass balance series for Holtedahlfonna & Kronebreen was updated for another year, making the continuous record consistent from 2003-2010. On Holtedahlfonna, all data was downloaded from 2 GPS stations, 2 automatic weather stations, 3 individual temperature loggers and an independent sonic sensor. Also, the seismic station located close to the front of Kronebreen was repaired and re-deployed.

After several unsuccessful drilling attempts the team's spirit is up again. In the early December the drill reached depth of 969,8 m and the thick layer of sandstone was found. The rock is porous enough to start tests on its ability to store carbon dioxide in the future. The project continues.

NILU scientists have built and tested new ultra-violet imaging camera that can detact emissions of SO2 and provide quantitative estimate of SO2 flux. The test was carried out in Ny-Ålesund where many large cruise ships emit unknown amounts of SO2 into the "pristine" air. The work was funded by Arctic Field Grant.

Methane gas release from Arctic seabed 04.09.2009

More than 250 plumes of gas bubbles have been discovered emanating from the seabed of the West Spitsbergen continental margin. Most of the gas was the greenhouse gas methane and evidence was found that rising water temperature will result in increased methane release.

An international team of paleontologists has unearthed the partial skull of a 15-meter-long marine reptile in Svalbard in summer 2008. Dubbed 'Predator X', the marine reptile is a new species of pliosaur, an apex predator that patrolled the Jurassic oceans 147 million years ago.

Spitsbergen Airship Museum in Longyearbyen was opened in November 2008. It tells the stories of the three airship expeditions in the Arctic. There are: Wellman Chicago Record Herald Polar Expedition on board of “America” in 1907-09, "Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile, Transpolar Flight” on board of “Norge” in 1926 and the ”Italia” expedition in 1928, as well as the rescue expeditions following the 1928 expedition.

In early April a group of glaciologists from NPI, Uppsala University and Utrecht University visited Lomonsovfonna and Nordenskiøldbreen for various field investigations. The same institutions have worked on these glaciers since 1997 when a 121 m deep ice core covering the past 800 years was drilled on the highest summit on Lomonosovfonna. The main scientific goal of the work on these glaciers is to investigate the present and the recent past climate and the input of long-range contaminants to Svalbard.

Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway has announced discovery of one of the largest marine reptile ever found. The skeleton of the pliosaur fossil indicates the animal was 15 meter long and the bones are 150 mln year old. The fossil was found in Svalbard in 2006 and excavated a year later.

Carla Freitas is a PhD student at the Norwegian Polar Institute. She was a guest lecturer at UNIS in June 2007 teaching Biotelemetry and biologging course (AB-325). She is working now as a researcher at the Institute of Marine Research in Arendal, Norway.
Carla has been working with satellite-tagged marine mammals (ringed seals and walruses). She has been studying their movement patterns trying to understand the effect of habitat conditions on their behaviour. The defence will take place in Tromsø, 1 March 2008.

The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) and the Governor of Svalbard will this summer record the distribution of PCB in Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and Pyramiden. The goal is to map local sources of pollution in Svalbard.

In mid-October the first GSM-network meteorological station was installed on top of Janssonhaugen. The station, located 20 km east of Longyearbyen in the inner part of the valley Adventdalen, is maintained and run by the Geology and Technical Departments at UNIS.

Field measurements and remote sensing studies of Austfonna indicate that the interior of the ice cap is thickening, while the edges are thinning and retreating. This behaviour is typical for glaciers building up towards a surge, but increased precipitation combined with warming might also contribute to the trend.

Most climate models predict a decrease of the mesospheric temperature as the tropospheric temperature increases (greenhouse effect). However, studies of mesosphere temperatures are not too abundant and have so far failed to provide a consistent trend.

MetOp finally launched 19.10.2006
Today at 18:28 CEST Eumetsat finally launched their first polar orbiting satellite from Baikonur in Kazakhstan. 14 times a day Met Op will pass by the North Pole and on most fly-bys it will be able to monitor the weather situation in the Nordic countries. The satellite is expected to provide more reliable weather data from the northern areas. SvalSat will download the data.

Gunnar Isachsen is one of the scientific pioneers of Svalbard and the Norwegian Polar Institute. He is portrayed on one of the new stamps that were published In Longyearbyen today. Isachsen was the leader of the expeditions financed and organized by Prince Albert I of Monaco, to Spitsbergen in 1906 and 1907.

New investigations of Environmental Pollutions 20.05.2006
Generally the seabed area outside Barentsburg in Grønfjorden appears as the most influenced, even if Adventfjorden outside Longyearbyen has the highest concentrations of hydro carbons (state class II-III for PAH). This study was carried out during summer 2005 and is a follow-up from previous analyses in 1994 and 1998.

Early end of sea ice season in Kongsfjorden 18.05.2006
As in other fjords at the western coast of Svalbard, Kongsfjorden was free of ice very early this year. In the framework of the two projects "MariClim" and "Climate effects of reducing black carbon emissions", in addition to the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) long-term project "Kongsfjorden sea ice monitoring" six scientists have been working in Kongsfjorden and Krossfjorden for 10 days.

Matthias Forwick (b. 1973) raises this question in his PhD thesis "Sedimentary Processes and Paleoenvironments in Spitsbergen fjords" defended at the Geological Institute, University of Tromsø.  The question is of great significance to the prediction of the future climate.

Warm water temperatures in Kongsfjorden 13.05.2006
The mean water temperature of Kongsfjorden in late April this year is estimated to be  0.42 oC; more than two centigrades warmer than normally. The data are based on 18 CTD measurements collected during a joint cruise between Norwegian Polar Institute (the MariClim project) and the University of Tromsø with their ship R/V Jan Mayen.

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) observed extreme events of polluted air transported from central Europe to Svalbard during the first week of May. The concentration of lower tropospheric ozone in Svalbard were the highest ever recorded.

Record warm April weather causing problems for researchers03.05.2006
The abnormal warm April weather in Svalbard was problematic to many field parties. Melting resulted in surface water both on fjord ice and in the valleys, among other causing snowmobiles fasten in water and slush. The monthly mean temperature reported by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute was the highest ever recorded for April at all the meteorological stations.
