A new
automatic weather has been placed in Pyramiden.
An expedition from the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI)
have this summer placed an automatic weather station in Pyramiden, 60km
north-east of Longyearbyen. The site has previously held an old Soviet
weather station from 1947-1957.
The employment of the station is a direct result of the Protocol between the
Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and the
Norwegian Meteorological Institute on Cooperation in the field of
Hydrometeorology. The weather station is a joint program between met.no and
AARI.
Data from the station will be available after the first year, in August
2012. The data (air temperature, only) is currently accumulated in the
internal storage of the AWS. There are plans to install a satellite
connection allowing for real time data as well as extend the measurements to
air temperature, humidity, wind, radiations a.o.
