Indian station in Ny-Ålesund officially opened |
On Tuesday 1st July 2008, the Indian station 'Himadri' has been
opened officially in Ny Ålesund.
The Indian Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Kapil
Sibal, inaugurated the station under the precence of Tora Aasland,
Norwegian Minister for Research and Higher Education, and other guests.
The director of the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR),
Rasik Ravindra, highlighted the advantages and possibilities that now
lie open for Indian researchers, and the good opportunities for
international collaboration that are found in Ny-Ålesund.
At the same time, an agreement of collaboration on climate research in
the Arctic and Antarctic between NCAOR and the Norwegian Polar Institute
(NPI) was signed. 'The water supply of two billion people is threatened
by the melting of Himalayan glaciers. An ice free Arctic will effect the
climate in India and is therefore a key variable to understand the
climate changes in the country' said the research director from NPI Kim
Holmen during the ceremony.
With India, 15 stations from 10 countries are now established in
Ny-Ålesund.
