According to the laws and regulations there are several situations where permits need to be obtained from the Governor of Svalbard. Examples are use of snowmobile outside management area 10, helicopter landings, establishment of installations. Most field activities require a permit from the Governor of Svalbard. 		Notification of travel plans in Svalbard for individual travellers	English/   Norwegian
		Individual travellers in Svalbard must notify the Governor's office of plans involving travel outside Management Area 10 (see map). The term 'Individual traveller' includes visiting tourists and scientists, local residents, and others on trips not organised by a tour operator. If planning a trip outside Management Area 10 you may be required by the Governor to present proof of insurance or equivalent guarantee to cover expenses in case of search and rescue operations or the transport of patients. Upon notifying the Governor's office you will be provided with a registration card. This card must be brought with you on the trip, and filled out and returned to the Governor's office before you leave Svalbard.
