| | Forum for observation &
sample exchange between researchers in Svalbard |
|
Often, both time and money constraint the amount of places a single
researcher can visit in Svalbard. On the other hand, a large number of
locations in Svalbard are visited by other researchers. In addition to
their own field work they often observe marked animals, rare plant species,
ice conditions, etc. Such observations are of high value for eg. monitoring
programs.
This forum is intended to facilitate the collection and exchange of
such observations between different researchers.
The function of this page is three-fold:
- If you would like to collect observations of any kind, you can
post a observation sheet
- If you need samples from specific areas or many locations in
Svalbard you can post a wish-list, including a sampling instruction (important:
take into account that certain samples need a permission by the Governor)
- If you have made observations you think may be interesting for
other researchers, you can post a note
Please check this page before leaving for field work - especially when
conducting field work in remote locations - you may be able to help a fellow
researcher without too much extra effort!
If you want to post a request on this page, please contact
post@svalbardscienceforum.no.

Sedimentation and turbidity along the south-western coast of Kongsfjorden The activity
of Kongsfjorden tidal glaciers results in high turbidity and high rates
of inorganic particulate sedimentation in near-glacier sites. On a
larger-scale Wlodarska-Kowalczuk et al. (2005) discriminated 4
soft-bottom macrofaunal associations along a gradient of glacier-induced
disturbance by their quantitative characteristics. We are seeking
specific information on sedimentation and/or turbidity along the
south-western coast of Kongsfjorden (Brogger-halvoya) along the 10m
isobar or further onshore.

Air photos of glaciers Photos taken
onboard the commercial airplane to/from Svalbard or on other Svalbard
flights are requested. You do not need to know the location of the photo.
Please send the photos to: Monica Sund,

Snowmelt pictures around Petuniabukta
Pictures of snow-covered Ebbadalen and other valleys around
Petuniabukta taken in the snow melting season are needed. If you
happen to be in any of these locations in late April, May and June
please take a camera shot and send the pictures to:

Marine mammal sightings The
Norwegian Polar Institute registers all sightings of marine mammals in
and around Svalbard. The book: Marine Mammals of Svalbard by Kit
M. Kovacs, Ian Gjertz and Christian Lydersen comes very handy here!
Observations
can be registered online (Marine
Mammals Sightings) or by filling the forms (form
in Norwegian),

Pink-footed goose neckbands Since 1990, the National
Environmental Research Institute, Denmark (NERI) has conducted marking
of pink-footed geese. More than 2000 pinkfeet have been ringed and
marked with a blue or white neckband with a three digit code, which can
be read at a distance with the aid of a telescope.

Barnacle geese with leg rings
The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), UK holds an extensive database of
the whereabouts of marked barnacle geese. If you observe barnacle geese
with leg rings, please make a note of the ring code and colour, the
date, time, location, an estimate of flock size and if possible an
assessment of whether or not the bird appeared to be paired and/or to
have a family.
